Jezera - island Murter

Croatia, Northern Dalmatia

Jezera with about 800 inhabitants are located in the cove of the same name, which faces east. They are located on the island of Murter, which is connected to the mainland by the modern drawbridge over the Murter Channel and is the largest island in the Šibenik archipelago. The administrative center of the island is Murter, which is also the manager of the Kornati National Park. Other tourist resorts are Tisno and Betina. Its convenient location near the most beautiful national parks Kornati (about 15km), Krka (about 50km) and Paklenica (about 100km) or the historic town of Šibenik makes it one of the most attractive tourist spots on the Adriatic. The highest elevation of the town of Jezera is called Broščica (113m), and together with the Čvrdak hill, which is equally high, protects the city from strong winds (bora) and winds from the open sea. The city is recommended to anyone looking for a quieter vacation without the hassle of a large resort and family with young children.

History and monuments

The history of the local seashore and the town of Jezera is very similar to the history of other villages in the vicinity - several fragments of Illyrian and Roman settlements were found (the Roman settlement of Collentum was on the island). Outside the village, there are few preserved monuments from the past (they are mostly churches from the 16th and 19th centuries). However, the island retains its ethnographic peculiarities, from the peculiar dialect to traditional folk festivals (St. Roch's feast 16.8., Murter's festival 8.9.). The holding of land on the island of Murter and then the expansion outside the island began already in the seventeenth century, when the original owners of the islands or individual plots of land (rich noblemen from Zadar) began to sell them to the "natives", i.e. the original inhabitants of Murter - the people of Murter. After some time, they no longer had enough land for growing crops and pasture for sheep, so their land ownership gradually grew so that today they belong to the largest land owners in the whole of Croatia.

Swimming and beach Jezera - island Murter

The beautiful groomed pebble beach in Lovišča bay is partially shaded and provides pleasant refreshment on hot summer days. An entrance fee of HRK 5 is collected. About 20 minutes' walk away are natural beaches with a breathtaking view of the open sea with the Kornati National Park in the background. Another pleasant swim in the azure blue sea is provided by Jezera bay.

For lovers of romance, there are ideal places for swimming in the direction of the village of Tisno, the natural bays here provide peace and privacy.

The Betina resort, where there is a popular city beach with sand and small pebbles, situated in the bay of Zadrače, also offers the possibility of swimming, diving, and water sports. Adjacent to it is another picturesque bay Hramina with a beautiful beach. The most popular swimming in the clear blue sea is in the bays on the west coast of the island.

The most famous beach on the island of Murter is Slanica, located in a large sandy bay. It is lined with a pine forest that provides pleasant shade. Thanks to the gradual descent into the sea, it is also suitable for small children.

Thanks to its good location, the island of Murter offers swimming in picturesque indented bays or on the nearby romantic islets of Visovac, Prišnjak, Artica, Mali and Veli Školjić, Mišine, Radelj, Arta Mala and Vela, Vinik Mali and Veli, and off the southwestern coast of Murter you can visit the islets of Kukuljari (also Kukulari), including the popular Kornati National Park or the breathtaking Krka National Park.

Sports offer

The Jezera resort is known especially among lovers of yachting and sport fishing. Several times a year, it becomes the scene of sea fishing competitions. One of the most famous marinas is located in the southern part of the Jezera bay. It is protected from the east by a breakwater. The marina was awarded the Blue Flag, has five piers with moorings and one technical pier with a crane for lifting boats. The bay has also become one of the starting points for sailing on the Kornati (boats and motorboats can be rented).
