History and monuments

Many preserved monuments bear witness to the history of Zaostrog dating back to Roman times. According to records from the time of the Byzantine emperor Constantine Porphyrogennetos, the Ostrog fortress under Mount Viter, after which Zaostrog was later named, was the capital and fortress of the then Croatian state of Paganija, which was founded by the Neretva people.

At the height of its rule in the 9th and 10th centuries, Paganija stretched from the Cetina River in the west to the Neretva River in the east, and included the Pelješac Peninsula, the islands of Brač, Hvar, Korčula and Mljet in the south.
It is an interesting fact, which is said from generation to generation, that on a fine day the ruler of Paganija could see all the places of his estate from the top of Viter on Ostrogem.

In the first years of the last century, under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, of which Dalmatia was also an integral part, a pier and a shipyard were built and floods were regulated. The biggest deterioration of the shipyards occurred in 1962 during the earthquake.

Among the most important of them is the Franciscan monastery of St. Mary, founded in the 14th century. The monastery is dominated by a high tower and interesting for visitors thanks to the museum with enthological collections, a gallery and an extensive library. Next to the monastery stands the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
