History and monuments
The history of the site began in the Neolithic. The island was gradually settled by Illyrians, Greeks, Roman immigrants and Venetians. Stari Grad has the character of old Dalmatian towns and offers visitors many historical monuments. Remains of giant masonry from early times in the town, a number of monuments of Roman settlement, a Dominican monastery in the 12th and 13th centuries, the town was elevated to a bishopric and became the administrative center of the island of Hvar.
