History and monuments

After the Turkish conquests in Bosnia in 1463, the inhabitants of the settlements Prhovo, Široke and Kruševo fled to safe regions called havens, and in the end of the 15th century, they inhabited a small island called Gola Glava, located near the coast. Since 1564 the settlement has been known by the name Primošten. At that time the settlement was was protected by the walls and towers and a draw bridge was the only communication with the mainland. So the island was over bridged, and that’s how it got its name Primošten = over bridged. When the Turks retreated, the draw bridge was replaced by the causeway.
At the end of the 19th century migrations of inhabitants were frequent, but in the early fifties of the 20th century tourism started to bloom. The restaurant “Kremik” opened in 1956 and was the first catering house with 20 additional beds for accommodation. By the year of 1983, the port “Marina Kremik” was built and was used for nautical tourism.
Today, Primošten is is one of the most popular tourist resorts in Dalmatia and ranks among the most picturesque small towns on the Adriatic. The buildings are constructed in the typical Dalmatian, Mediterranean way - the houses are built of stone with roofs of stone slabs and numerous narrow picturesque lanes, also paved by stones.
The church of St. Juraj – located on a hill that offers sweeping coastal views. It was built in 1485 and restored in 1760.
