History and monuments

The original village of Stara or Gornja Podaca, which is located under the Biokovo mountain range and is now abandoned, was first mentioned in 1477.

A defensive tower against the Turks was built on the hill at that time, and also from the 12th century the church of St. John (St. Ivan's Church) near the cemetery, which was financed by the nobles of the Kačić family. In addition to the church of St. Jurja in Tučepy and the church of St. Michal (St. Mihovil Church) in Igrane is one of the most important monuments of early medieval architecture in the 12th century. At the entrance to the church there is a tombstone with the names of the Kačić family, as well as a medieval ancestral tomb.
Church of St. St. Stephen's Church (Church of St. Stjepan) from 1492 was demolished in the 18th century, but the present church was built in its place in 1772. The Church of St. Mary was built on the coast after the 1962 earthquake.

Podaca used to be part of the Croatian state of Paganija, founded by the Neretva people. At the height of its rule in the 9th and 10th centuries, Paganija stretched from the Cetina River in the west to the Neretva River in the east, and included the Pelješac Peninsula, the islands of Brač, Hvar, Korčula and Mljet in the south. The capital and fortress of Paganija was in Ostrog, today's town of Zaostrog.
It is an interesting fact, which is said from generation to generation, that on a fine day the ruler of Paganija could see all the places of his estate from the top of Viter nad Ostrog.
