Jelsa - island Hvar

Croatia, Central Dalmatia

The town of Jelsa is located approximately in the middle of the island of Hvar, in a bay surrounded by forest, olive groves, vineyards and clear sea. Jelsa has about 1900 permanent residents, but in summer this number grows because Jalsa is a popular Hvar resort. The pleasant climate with mild winters, especially hot summers and many sunny hours are some of the factors that attract a large number of visitors from many countries. The coast is intersected with many sandy beaches along the coast and a promenade leading to the village of Vrboska. Jelas is connected to the island of Brac and Bol by a catamaran. In Jelsa, the island of Hvar is reached by a ferry that departs from Split and sails into the town of Hvar or the town of Stari Grad, from which Jelsa is about 10 km away.

History and monuments

The old town of Jelsa is still visible today thanks to the well-preserved defensive wall, which is built on the western side of the Gradina peninsula. Founded in the 14th century, the city was built on an area of 6 ha and the total length of the defensive wall was 172 m and 1.3 m wide. Today the walls are about 2.5-3 meters high and the openings for the guards are still visible.

Once a port for the village of Pitve, the fishing and farming town developed into a town known for its shipbuilding and marina, and finally into a popular resort.
Between 1605 and 1787, an Augustinian monastery stood on the site of today's church, of which only the church with the bell tower from 1605 has survived.
Church of St. Marie (Crkva - fortress of St. Mary) from 1331 was originally an early Gothic church, which was expanded and fortified in 1535. Today the parish church has 4 chapels, 2 larger ones from the 17th century and 2 smaller ones from the 19th century. In the first chapel on the right, there is a painting of the Mother and the Torture of Fabian and Sebastian by the Flemish-Venetian painter P. de Coster. On the left is a relief of Antonín Por. Today the church is called the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
The Church of Our Lady of Health (Crkva Gospe od zdravlja) - was built in 1535 on the Račić hill, from where there is a beautiful view of the harbor and the fir fields. The church was rebuilt twice, and in 1863 the western nave and bell tower were added. The church contains an altarpiece by Palma the Younger, 2 wooden sculptures from the 18th century and valuable icons in a Renaissance window from the 16th century. Our Lady of Good Health is the patron saint of Jelsa and the surrounding area and protects against diseases. According to an old tradition, on November 21, the inhabitants of the central part of the island of Hvar gather for a religious service.

Church of St. Rocha (Crkva Sv. Roka) - was built in the second half of the 16th century, but the first mention is from 1601. The church was rebuilt several times, most recently in 1999. Gothic and Romanesque elements are still evident, such as the bell tower. On the altar is an image of the Virgin Mary under the clouds, on the right side St. Anthony of Padua with a naked child in his arms and St. Roch on his knees with a dog,

Church of St. Michala (Crkva Sv. Mihovila) - built in 1463 in the Gothic style by the Radašinić brothers and in the second half of the 18th century it was expanded with a new altar and a western facade in the Baroque style.
