History and monuments

The picturesque settlement of Betina was first mentioned in 1423, when the settlement had only fifteen inhabitants, who lived in eight houses. At the end of the 16th century, the number of inhabitants increases. The people living around Lake Vransk are fleeing from the Turks to the settlement of Betina. According to an old legend, the settlement got its name from the Celtic word bet, which means mouth. This is what the ancient inhabitants called the natural harbor, which looks like a mouth when viewed from the sea and has protected fishing boats from the strong storms in the area for centuries.

The central historic part of Betina was built on the eastern slopes of Cape Artić. Cape Artič is located at the northern gate of the Murter Strait. The church tower of the parish church of St. František Asišký rises above the town. It was built in the 17th century by a master builder known as Ivan Skoka from Šibenik. Very interesting and impressive are the networks of narrow streets leading from the church to the center of the old town.

Betina is also famous for its wooden boat builders, called kalafats. For those times, very modern ships and shipyards were built (the first shipyard dates from 1848). Today, this tradition is slowly disappearing and, apart from a few private and smaller family shipyards, the inhabitants make a living mainly by growing wine, olives and fishing.

Swimming and beach Betina - island Murter

In the resort of Betina there is a well-maintained urban beach with sand and small pebbles, located in Zadrače Bay, next to it is another picturesque Hramina Bay with a beautiful beach. The most popular swimming in the clear blue sea is in the bays on the west coast of the island.

The most famous beach is Slanica located in a large sandy bay. It is lined with a pine forest that provides pleasant shade. It has a gradual descent into the sea and is also suitable for small children.

Thanks to its convenient location, this area offers swimming in picturesque indented bays or on the nearby islands of Visovac, Prišnjak, Artica, Mali and Veli Školjić, Vinik Mali and Veli, Mišine, Radelj, Arta Mala and Vela and others; off the southwestern coast of Murter you can visit the Kukuljari (also Kukulari) islets.

You can also enjoy a nice swim in NP Kornati or NP Krka.

Sports offer

Right in the resort there is a varied offer, especially for lovers of yachting and sport fishing. It is best known for Marina Betina and the shipyard, which has a two-hundred-year tradition of building wooden ships. Throughout the year, many sports races and competitions are held here, such as the famous Murter - Kornati yacht race.
