Zaostrog is a little tourist town situated in the South of Makarska Riviera, 65 km from the town of Split and only 7 km southwards from the resort of Gradac. There are only 350 inhabitants in Zaostrog at the moment and they make their living in tourism and catering.
The coast is lined with long broken pebble beaches with a gradual access to the sea. Only 3 km from Zaostrog there is a village called Drvenik where you can start a boat trip to the islands of Hvar or Korčula. Zaostrog is an ideal place for spending a calm holiday without the noise of discosMany preserved monuments give evidence of the history of Zaostrog dating back to the Roman period. According to the documents from the period of the Byzantine Emperor Constantin Porfyrogennetos, the fortress of Ostrog under the mountain of Viter (which later gave name to Zaostrog) was a capital and fort of former Croatian state of Paganija, which was founded by Neretva people.
At the top of its fame in the 9th and 10th century the territory of Paganija was spread between the river of Cetina in the West and the river of Neretva in the East. It also included the Pelješac peninsula, island of Brač, Hvar, Korčula and Mljet in the South.
An interesting fact which is being told across generations is that on a nice day, the leader of Paganija could see all his properties from the top of Viter above Ostrog.
During the early years of the last century under the Austro-Hungarian monarchy which also included Dalmatia, the peer and the ship-yards were built and floods were regulated. The biggest devaluation of ship-yards was caused by an earthquake in 1962.
The Franciscan Monastery of St. Mary founded in the 14th century is one of the most important monuments. The monastery towers above thanks to its high tower and it is interesting to its visitors thanks to its museum with enthnological collections, gallery and a large library. Next to the monastery, there is a parish Church of the Assumpion.
The coast near the resort of Zaostrog is lined with long broken beaches, varying from jags to little pebble beaches, or sandy places with a gradual access to the sea, which is suitable for families with children.
