History and monuments

The first mention of Bibinje dates back to 1214. The area of Bibinje was already built in Roman times, which proves the very origin of the name Bibinje. Bibinje got its name from Vibiju (Vibius), a Roman patron who had his seat in today's territory of Bibinje.
Very little can be said with certainty about the very creation of Bibinje, as there are almost no documents that write about it. However, according to one national story, the first settlement of Bibinje was on the top of the hill above the present-day position of the village (precisely, in the Bibinje field on its slopes. Today, the center of this locality is called Petrina after the church of St. Peter from the 8th century. Because of the plague that so she wandered through the region, the nation moved from Petrine to the peninsula by the sea, where it is still today.
At the beginning of the 2nd millennium, Bibinje was an important seat of Croatian kings. In those times, however, Bibinje is not remembered as Bibanum, but as Tochinia (Točinja). In 1066, on the occasion of the founding of the Benedictine order in Zadar, the Croatian king Petar Krešimir IV. donated the royal seat of Točinje (today's Bibinje) to the Benedictine order as a gift for permanent ownership. At that time, Bibinje remained closely connected with the Benedictines in Zadar, their largest seat was in Bibinje. Under the protection of the Benedictine order, in the period from the late Middle Ages to the first invasion of the Turks, Bibinje experienced an unprecedented economic development.
In the middle of the 15th century the raids of the Turks began. This was one of the most difficult periods in the entire history of Bibinje. In 1468, the Venetians fortified Bibinje with a strong defensive wall and tower. One of the greatest national heroes from the time of the wars against the Turks is the cleric Stipan Sorić from Bibinje. Thanks to him, not only the region of Zadar was liberated, but also the region of Dalmatia and Liki. He died in 1648 in Ribnik, Lika. From Bibinje come many clergymen who have preserved the seriousness of faith and religion among the nation. Fr. are known from modern history. Ante Fuzul, Fr. Miho Levali, Fr. Petar Spanić and Fr. Marko Sikirić. There are several churches in the Bibinje area. The oldest is the church of St. Peter, which is from the 8th century; Church of the Martyrdom of St. Ivan the Baptist is from the 12th century. and is located at the tip of the peninsula in Bibinje. There are 2 churches in the old historic center: one is the Church of the Nativity of St. Ivan the Baptist, probably from the 15th century, and the other is the church of St. Year from the 16th century. In 1985, the inhabitants of Bibinje built a new church - uznesenja sv. virgin mary
